Which battery should I choose for my watch?

If you own a quartz watch, You should have changed the battery in your watch approximately every two years. The battery in your watch is necessarily a button cell battery, which, due to its shape, fits perfectly in a quartz watch.

There are 3 types of batteries that you can find in your watch: silver oxide batteries, alkaline batteries and lithium batteries.

• Silver oxide batteries They are recognizable because the letter S is engraved on the battery. This type of battery provides a voltage of 1.55 Volts.

• Alkaline batteries These are the batteries that will resemble silver oxide batteries. They are marked with the letter L and deliver a voltage of 1.5V

• Lithium batteries They provide a voltage of 3V and are numbered by the letter C. These are often used for watches with more complications or chronograph watches which, in general, require more power.

Finally, there are different battery sizes: their diameter is between 5mm and 20mm and the thickness is between 1 and 6mm.

While swapping a silver oxide battery for an alkaline battery in your watch doesn't pose a major risk to the watch itself, it's crucial to note that you should absolutely never use lithium batteries in a watch that isn't designed for that type of battery. Doing so could permanently damage your watch.

How long does a button cell battery last?

It's difficult to answer this question precisely because a battery's lifespan depends on how often you use your watch, the type of battery it uses, and the complications it features. Generally speaking, you should replace your watch battery every two years if you wear it daily. Factors such as the type of watch and the power requirements of its complications will influence its longevity.

Today, there are about fifty different types of watch batteries. Most are button cell batteries. These silver oxide batteries can power the watch mechanism for 12 to 18 months. Some watches indicate when the battery needs replacing; the second hand then jumps every five seconds.
